In the last session (11/20/11) the party descended into the darkness, surrounded by the ruins of an ancient civilization. Beneath the surface, beyond the jungle of kelp and forest of coral shrouded by the floating Weed-Sea above, they beheld a realm of rubble, silt, and detritus.


The party had encountered the tribe of water dwarves which dwelt within the ruins and protected the hydrothermal vents, known as white smokers. A red-skinned race, the water dwarves often kept long beards and unkempt hair in flowing dreadlocks resembling the hardened tubes of certain sea worms. The water dwarves were known to dwell near the vents for they were a chemosynthetic race, requiring the warmer waters of the vents for their very survival and using the smokers as forges to fashion calciferous weapons and armor.


Having met a water dwarf sentry, king, miner, and shaman, the party became suspicious, as none of the dwarves were seen in the company of the others. Several of the dwarves wore identical rings, adding to their assumptions.


Between two rows of stone columns, NeeKaa, Xaetra, and the dwarven sentry had vanished without a trace. Beside the stone columns, Sakura had located a magical pouch that was larger on the inside that it was on the outside. Within the pouch were several items including the miner’s seaweed tunic and the shaman’s mask and staff.


Having passed beyond time, NeeKaa and Xaetra beheld a frozen moment. Between the two rows of stone columns grew blades of grass. Above their heads was a blackened sky illuminated by sparkling stars. Yet the region seemed hospitable to Drylanders and water-breathers alike. Beside each column rested an ornate helmet. The sentry chose his moment with care, to reveal his secret to NeeKaa and Xaetra.


“I was here, looking at the stars” the sentry began “when I returned from the columns, I found my kinsmen dead. All of them, slaughtered.”


Exposed to the open sea, the remaining members of the party watches as three kapoacinth descended from above. Distant relatives to air-breathing gargoyles, two of the stony-skinned creatures attacked with nets, while the third carried an ornate club inset with sharks’ teeth. Cloaked by the blanket of mineral-rich waters spewing from the plumes, the party noted the creatures were intent upon attack.


Taken unaware, one kapoacinth was scalded by the intense heat of the white smoker. The remaining sea gargoyles attacked, the first casting his magical net into a viscous mass of webbing which entrapped Dorman, while the second swung his war club over his head, summoning a spinning vortex.


Summoning a creature of the deep, NeeKaa calls a bigfin squid to do her bidding. The creature disarmed the net-wielding gargoyle before entwining the kapoacinth with its tentacles.


“This was not of my doing.” the gargoyle spoke in Aquan. He did not resist, when the squid wrapped its tentacled grasp around his torso. Instead, he closed his eyes. “We were to collect the dwarf, the keeper of the ruins. If we fail, we die.”


As the party watched, the club-wielding gargoyle stiffened into unmoving stone.


“The storm hags…” he gasped, clutching at his arm. “They… they seek the pearl. They dwell in the skies above…” he whispered, his voice harsh and raspy “In Cloudsea. They have captured the hydrimera… It’s ink turns victims to… to…  stone.”


Sakura noted that the body of the gargoyle slain by the white smoker oozed black wisps of fluid from his skin. As the wisps rose, they begin to envelop the tiny ephyra attached to the vent. One by one, they began to petrify.


Horrified, the ephyra Phreb asked Xaetra for help. Adept at creating space within space she took the glass globe from the aventi Noi, cast aside its residents, and placed the ephyra within. Though confused, disoriented, and greatly reduced in size, they survived their transformation within clouded waters.


“They live as does the water dwarf.” she explained “WIthout the waters of the smokers, they would perish.”
